TV Review: SMALLVILLE - SEASON EIGHT - 'Hex'

SMALLVILLE is usually a decent show. The last few episodes have been suspect, but overall I would say that season eight has, at the very least, been entertaining. Then “Hex” came along. I was laughing out loud, and not in a good way. It was cheesy, gimmicky, and, well, just plain dumb. I know Zatanna (Serinda Swan) is taken straight from the comic books, but it still seems silly that of all the characters in the DC universe, they had to choose her.

But choose and abuse her they did. We first encounter Zatanna at Chloe’s (Allison Mack) birthday party. She grants Chloe one wish, and apparently Chloe wishes she was Lois Lane (Erica Durance). To Chloe’s amazement, she wakes up the next day as Lois. It’s all down hill from there as Lois and Clark (Tom Welling) try to find a way to change Chloe back to her old normal self.

At one point, Clark himself is granted a wish. He inadvertently wishes that he was a normal reporter and forget about the whole superhero thing. Lo and behold, Clark forgets about saving the world, and forgets the Chloe has changed into Lois. In one of the few entertaining scenes, Chloe (or should we call her Chlois?) takes Clark to the roof of the Daily Planet and tries to convince him that he has super powers. She even attempts to bash him with a pole. It was pretty camp, but intentionally so, which in turn made it a fun scene.

Too bad the same can’t be said for the rest of the episode. “Hex” really was just a silly installment. Zatanna recruits Oliver (Justin Hartley) to retrieve a magicbook that once belonged to her magician father. Once her father died, LuthorCorp siezed the book. She plans on using this book to bring her father back to life. The only problem is that someone must die for her father to return. She finally obtains the book and begins to cast the spell on the rooftop of a building.

Chloe convinces Clark to super leap to the top of the building and stop Zatanna. In that moment, Chloe reverts back to her old self. Clark leaps the tall building in a single bound (I had to say it once) and convinces Zatanna that her dying to bring her father back is something that her father would never want.Everything returns back to normal and everyone is happy--except the viewers.

Erica Durance does an admirable job of acting like Chloe trapped in Lois’ body. It was a difficult task, I’m sure, but she convinced me. Tom Welling does a good job as well playing a normal human. His lines often teetered on disaster, but Welling adds enough charm for him to slickly pull it off. In fact, considering what they had to work with, all the actors did a fine job in keeping a straight face. That was the one true shining spot of “Hex”.
